Day

I'm going to go feed the Bros in a short bit, then clean up and start getting ready for dinner. The Faire closes at 18:00, Herself expects to be back to the Ranch sometime between 19:00 and 20:00. Maybe to the earlier part of that because I think she wants to see the kids.

Speaking of the kids, apparently when the Bros were 'disappearing' from sight while we kept an eye on the new additions, they were quite busy here at teh House. I never cease to be amazed at the things Border Collies can learn to do. Nick the cards right out of my cameras, upload to the PC and then upload to the Web. Ya. I'm impressed. But if you want to see pictures of some of the new kids, follow that link.

Another pair of kids this morning, these two from one of our older does who is getting to a point where... well, we'll probably be feeding her kids too. Particularly since we rather like JuneBug. She got the tips of one leg, just the hooves, caught under a platform when she was a wee kid. Our yearling bull calf at the time nudged the platform onto her. We don't know how deliberate that was, doesn't matter. By the time we found her, those hoof toetips were dead. She lost them within a week, but healed fine otherwise.

Nobody told her she couldn't do things with only 3.95 feet, so she does. She's actually one of the more dominant does in the herd.

And she presented us doelings. Herself is wanting those doelings. The fall kidding was near 95% bucklings which is good for sales later (much later) this year and into next year. However, a higher portion than we'd like of the does are these older does. We need their replacements.

So. I'm keeping an eye on the Ranch all day. Herself has been notified. She approves.

Goat who recently kidded a still-birth is doing OK. That for those of you who are wondering, eh? Heh. Maybe I should make a Ranch TMI filter. *G*

Good News: Labouring doe is now delivered, at least of one. May be the only one. Labouring doe is alive.

Bad News: Kid is not, as suspected. Head was turned, kid jammed up trying to be born, probably been dead for near a week. Lots of stool staining on the hindquarters. Fluids smell foul, and that is to my impaired sense of smell.

We dosed here with antibiotics, she's got food and water handy. Now, tincture of time.

Not sure if yesterday (or Sunday as well, apparently) the DDOS attack on LJ affected this, but I am not able to post photos from Flickr here. Alas and alack, that means I can't show you this, here.

Blue skies, nothin' but blue skies...
This is what we kept an eye on the new kids under this past Sunday, here in North Central Baja Jorja. Yes, the Goats are Kidding. Srsly! Follow the link to see, and in case the link doesn't work copy and past the URL

Sunday plan: originally, daytrip down to visit with [livejournal.com profile] fatfred. Revised after wind to reinforcing patches to east fenceline.

Actual: Ranch obstetrical emergency. Outcome: not so good.

Called out to Hospital yesterday. Was on a fairly short leash to the white porcelan seat. Between interludes, helped Herself to repair a quintain; for those unfamiliar with the term, it's a training tool for medieval/rennaisance horse combat. Swinging arm at the top of a post, rider passes and strikes a target, if not done correctly the back side of the arm comes around and thwacks the rider. It was damaged in practice, and now it's much better thank you.

Herself didn't head out right off after that was fixed, though, as there were severe weather alerts, and tornado watches and warnings on the area. She left about 15:00, and still caught a lot of bad weather. The site for the event is only about two hours (normal) north of us, and she didn't get there until near 19:00. Not staying on site; she and freinds reserved a small block of rooms at a local motel.

So I've got Ranch Watch for the weekend. About to head out to see if any goat babies showed up in the storm last night. Houdini is nudging very insistantly that it's time to go out.
