Goat who recently kidded a still-birth is doing OK. That for those of you who are wondering, eh? Heh. Maybe I should make a Ranch TMI filter. *G*

Yeah, right. Remind me of that next time my hand gets crushed by a contraction while trying to salvage a kid and help a labouring doe.

The one described here. This doe comes from a doe that started a line which is very, very skittish about people. Even kids we've bottle-fed from this particular tree turn out skittish about people, which is pretty amazing.

aw.
one of my pathology profs has goats; Tennesee myotonic 'fainting' goats. He's also very into the genetics of domestication, and it sounds like her line is maybe a little atavistic?
Curoius; do they have much white on them?

We've got some white goats in the herd; they trace back to a pygmy doe we acquired as a bottle-kid through a friend. There are white markings on most of the goats, as they are a mix of Nubian, French Alpine, and that pygmy. The one in particular is mostly brown, with some white streaks and spots. She may be atavistic, since she's so skittish about people.

The white, apparently, correlates with domesticity (at least, according to Dr. Sponenberg); at least, white socks, stars and markings underneath the chest and body do. He's very into coat color genetics, as well, and tells me that those markings are due to melanocytes failing to migrate out to the full distance during embyonic development. And there is some connectin between coloring and the nervous system, since mealanocytes and neural cells come from the same embryonic layer. So maybe her having less white than the others supports that hypothesis?

Maybe, and I'll for sure relay this to Herself who will be interested.

What I know for sure. As of this morning she's feeling well enough to be skittish again. No getting close to her any more. *G*
