Come to think of it, both of the abovementioned activities were inspired by a similar thought exercise. My friend scorched_mirth and I were working insane hours at Microsoft and I had completely lost track of having a personal life, and one day he said to me: "If you were going to die next week and had nothing to lose or risk, what would you do?" "Go on a long hiking trip" and "go whitewater rafting" were two of my answers.
"Eat incredibly good food" and "have sex with all my ex-partners who are still good buddies" (which comprises most of the people I've ever seriously dated) were two of my other answers. I probably won't get around to the latter, though, as most of them are married now and I don't think their wives would like it.
