From many places. Most recently from [livejournal.com profile] fatfred.

Tell me three things I ought to do before I die.

Then, if you care to, post this in your LJ and ask your friends to do the same.

1) Hike the Breen Oakwood in N. ireland. It's an incredible experience!
2) visit an old graveyard, and see what's on the stones... it's educational
3) take a road trip with friends, find an all night place in the middle of nowhere, and see what happens at 3am.

re 1: OK. Next question, are there parts that may be done as day hikes? This Old Knee might object to longer than that.

re 2: I'm actually planning on this in N'Orleans. *G* It's something I do periodically, for the reasons you mention.

re 3: Not sure if G'ville qualifies as middle of nowhere (how about it, [livejournal.com profile] marjai?) but have been in an all night place at 3 am (NOT counting hospital, either.\yech).

Road trip sound like fun!

1. Take several months to travel and take photos and devote your time entirely to your art.

2. Go out and do something scary that you wouldn't consider doing when in your right mind. For me, that was hiking through the northern Rockies and whitewater rafting a class-four river. As it happens, my body won't allow such activities anymore (at least, not without massive accomodations), so I'm endlessly glad I did those things even though I might not choose to do them again even if I could, and I'm very grateful to have those things in my memory file. Having a lot of diverse things in your memory file is Good.

3. Meet me.

Come to think of it, both of the abovementioned activities were inspired by a similar thought exercise. My friend [livejournal.com profile] scorched_mirth and I were working insane hours at Microsoft and I had completely lost track of having a personal life, and one day he said to me: "If you were going to die next week and had nothing to lose or risk, what would you do?" "Go on a long hiking trip" and "go whitewater rafting" were two of my answers.

"Eat incredibly good food" and "have sex with all my ex-partners who are still good buddies" (which comprises most of the people I've ever seriously dated) were two of my other answers. I probably won't get around to the latter, though, as most of them are married now and I don't think their wives would like it.

I like the several months part of the idea; spent a month in NZ and three weeks of that month were devoted to photography. It is a fine experience.

I'm not sure how to react to #2. I've done scary things, sometimes by my choice, sometimes not exactly (though I accept I made the initial choices that got me to the place and time...). I'm not sure how to react...

You, I will say, are already on the To Do list. I consider it more a question of when, not if. *G*

Well, it's a personal thing. I can't know what you should do. I could give #1 a good guess, knowing at least a few of your passions. #2 is stabbing in the dark. It worked for me because at that time I had been at a sedentary desk job for a few years and felt that I was developing a fear of breaking routine, and doing something that I essentially had to force myself to do moved me out of that place.

I'm on your "to do" list, huh? My husband will get a laugh out of that particular phrasing. ;-)

Yeah, I know that's not what you meant.

Oh, but I did phrase it that way on purpose.

Laughter is one of the best medicines.
