Not quite everything.

Amongst other things done last weekend, not yet reported on, I copied music files onto the Treo 750 Smart Phone. Actually, I copied the files onto a mini-SD card, which is working in the Treo via a Mini-Micro converter card. This will lead to a couple of things here.

First, the Music. I copied mostly a bunch of Windows Media Player files (as in, when I ripped the CD Windows made them Media Player files), and some MP3 files. It's a 2 Gb card, so there's a goodly amount of music there. Sound quality is rather good, particularly with the headphone set that came with the device. I've not tried another headset yet, only this one. The headset includes a mike, as it then serves as the phone's headset. Eh.

Volume control is perhaps my biggest complaint, and that not very big. The iShuffle provides very fine volume control. The Treo 'steps' the volume, no fine tuning. Playlists becomes a potential issue, just as with the iShuffle. There is apparently one playlist; what is loaded. I've listened to it straight through, since it is a grab-bag of pieces I like. Random Shuffle play is an option. Not a different playlist.

Receiving a call does mute the Media Player, just as I suspect making a call will. Hasn't happened often, so I don't know if the Treo is 'pausing' the current play, or simply muting it. Either is acceptable, considering this is also my phone. Other applications will also run (i.e. Calendar, Contacts, or other application altogether), without any problem. Power consumption is not noticeably higher than before starting to use the music features.

Advantage, then, lies in only carrying about one device.

Second, the card, and actually this is more about the first card I used. That one is also a 2 Gb card, but is a mini rather than a micro. The one difference I've noticed is that the Treo seems to like the Micro in a Mini-Converter better than the Mini card itself. With the Mini in, the device frequently informed me that the card had been removed, when it hadn't actually been touched at all. Not sure what's up with that.

We now return you to your otherwise even more boring Friday.

That is all. We now return you to your normal Friday.

Houston, we've achieved successful synchronisation. So from the point of view of being a PDA and being a Phone, this toy tool is now classified as useful. It's got my calendar (other than some details, which happened today and which haven't been put into Outlook yet), it's got All Your Phone Numbers (if I possessed your phone number before the synchronisation anyway), and I didn't bother transcribing the To Do list. I'll re-create that as I go.

As for why the sync process wasn't working? A bit more patient detective work (why thank you [livejournal.com profile] ofuroyama), and I lay all the responsibility right back where I thought it would arise. It's 90% Microshaft's fault, and 10% Palm's fault for giving up on their OS.

I can has smartfone.

Saturday. Feed run, as usual, and then while Herself worked at taking down a stretch of 19 year old fence with patches of holes I worked on fixing up a couple of the water points which were leaking. I don't mind the leaking in one sense. We put big buckets under the spigot to catch the leak. While the goats were wandering this gave them additional watering spots. When the Bros are making rounds with me, this gives them additional watering spots, which for a black (mostly black) dog in North Central Baja Jorja in the summer time is important.

There's more fence to replace, but this stretch is the worst. Was the worst. As mentioned it's 19 year old fencing and caused me to pause as we rolled up the remnant fence fabric... we put this fence in when we first got the goats. Lately they've been looking at it as more a suggestion they shouldn't wander out of their paddock. A suggestion they've mostly ignored. Now it's more than a suggestion.

Between water works and fencing, a bit of sun exposure. There've been other posts by friends and readers here about sun exposure and predominantly norther European/Anglo-Saxon/Celtic heritage. All of the above apply to your narrator. Thus my arms, portions of my legs, and my neck are somewhat redder today than they were last Friday. Yes, that makes me a red-neck. Got a problem with that? The gate is that way.

Sunday. Laundry run, being as we've still not gotten the washer fixed. This included, on yesterday's occasion, a stop at the local Ace Hardware for some more water works maintenance supplies, a stop at the local pharmacy for Herself's prescription, and two loads of wash. Wash only, brought it home to dry. Drove through some rain coming home, not much.

Also Sunday worked on the migration of data from the Palm Desktop universe to the Outlook Universe. I've decided to give the Palm Treo 750 a shot, even given that it requires using Outlook as a Personal Information Manager. I think this will avoid the problems of virus security by not using the Outlook e-mail management tool. My theory is, if I never use Outlook E-mail, then I can't open anything with a virus.

To be fair here, Palm is not being terribly helpful in the transfer either. The 'conduits' which should allow a Palm handheld to talk to Outlook during the hot-sync operation are not talking. Thus, no sync from the old Tungsten to Outlook. This required (because I am not going to purchase software for a one-time use to migrate data) doing things the 'hard' way, exporting data from the Palm Desktop as comma-delimited files and importing into Outlook.

Contacts (phone numbers, addresses, such) moved fairly easily. It required reviewing the entries to make sure all fields imported correctly (more or less, and acceptible), and then being able to eliminate some duplicates which the flat-file database system Palm uses necessitated, by making additional links as appropriate in Outlook.

Memo's also made the transition without too much trouble. The To-Do list, right up front in the Palm Support web information, won't make the transition. Copy and paste individually. Maybe. We'll see.

Calendar, on the other hand, is not playing friendly. The Palm software I have (updated on Friday via download) will only 'export' the Calendar data to an 'archive' file format, which Outlook won't read, nor will Paradox, nor probably Access. Outlook will accept a 'VCal' format for import; it's not a selection for export from the Palm Desktop. Today will see a bit of time researching this, particularly since Calendar is one of the major reasons I use a PDA/PIM.

During and after laundry (i.e. while at home drying) I also got a bit more writing done on a bit of story which much needs it. Not going to dwell much on this now, because I plan on posting the story to LJ when done. It's up to 7000 words plus some change right now, so it will probably be posted in serial format, one section a day. I'd hit a spot where the details just weren't coming along, though the outline stares at me indicated what it is that happens at that point. So I skipped along to the next section, got that written, and started on the wrap-up section. We'll see. I'd like to get this thing up here before the end of May.

Evening both days included hot-soak in the tub.

That's my exciting weekend. I need a weekend from my weekend.

However, I do not quite yet have functional Treo. Ordered two new phones for Herself and I, and the one for myself is a Palm Treo 750. The phones arrived on Wednesday according to the shipper's web site/tracking page. We didn't find them until yesterday afternoon, early evening. They'd been left on the back porch of Studio 318, inside, leaning against the back door. Probably the delivery fellow arrived on teh Ranch when Herself was off making a feed run. This is OK, overall, as the phones arrived.

I haven't activated the new account/numbers (they're the same numbers, and the old phones are still responding to them) quite yet. The instructions that came with both phones indicated getting the batteries fully charged first (done), and for the Treo installing the synchronisation software and synching the device first.

Herein lies the current dilemma. I ordered the phone under the impression it is using Palm's operating system. This proves not to be the case. It's using Windows Mobile, and so the software is Microshaft's Active Synch. I've installed that. It appears to have installed acceptably. However, the PC won't find the device, even when the device is connected via the hot-synch cable. What I can see of the configuration setup is that it's all set up correctly, but I don't have the time right now to trouble-shoot in depth.

Maybe later.

Meanwhile, the old phone is connecting, the old Palm Tungsten is still working though with wonky colours (and not Willy Wonka either) on the display making it very difficult to read. More on the saga as time permits.

Because Hospital wants me to do things, other things, than getting my new phone toy working.

::sigh::
