Being an off to work at Hospital day, I left teh Ranch dark and early, driving through fog as expected.

Later, when Herself headed out to do morning rounds she took the Bros with her as usual. Getting back to the House, she started feeding the Dirty Yard Birds (chickens), then put Houdini on his line (he asked to stay outdoors) and turned around to put Squrrl back on his line.

No Squrrl. Called him. No response. Looked behind the House, calling. No Squrrl. Checked over on next door neighbors north pasture. No Squrrl. Checked over in our cow pasture. No Squrrl. Bother. Headed into the house to get her pouch with drivers license to go looking and

O Hai, I'm Right Here!

Right. Someone wants to be Indoor Dog #2.

SNORF! O, SQRRL!

My dad and I spent 30 minutes one time scouring the neighborhood for Riley. He was on my bed.

I Concur. If I can do three big dogs in a teeny house, one more little border collie should fit right in at the ranch!

This requires Squrrl learn that lifting ones leg to mark territory inside the House is not acceptable behaviour.

Upon Which we are working.

We almost lost Minnow a few days ago, so I empathize with the heart stoppage! I'm glad he turned out to be safe and sound.

We're thinking that when we have a house, we might get a border collie.

Sabre has finally figured out how to jump/climb our 4' chain link fence as of two weeks ago. This, after finally getting all 500+ feet of backyard fence-line dug in with chicken wire fastened to the link below to prevent him from digging out and running around, trying to eat Danna's cats.

Unless & until I can add two feet of welded wire mesh to the top, Sabre's wings are now clipped. (It's either that or spend 4K on a new 6' fence. Not.) He's now tricked out in Jett's old Kelty hiking saddlebags with 4.8 lbs. of pine kitty litter when out in the back yard. He thinks it sucks, but it's the only way he can be unsupervised outside for an hour or two while I work. (I still check on him if he has the pack on and he gets to run around and play without it if I'm out with him.) He's also now always in the house with the dog door closed if I'm not home. Saddlebags = no digging and no climbing and no escaping. Hah! Not the longterm solution, but beats sitting in the studio all day when it's nice out and the squirrels are getting bold.

You'd think a 73 lb. beast like him wouldn't be such a baby about it though. Took him three days to stop pouting and acting like Eeyore. Geez, little 40 lb. Aussie Jett used to do back-flips when we brought out HER hiking saddlebags when she was young and she carried almost as much in her kibble rations. (About 3 lbs., max.) Wearing her saddlebags was a JOB, dammit, and one to be proud of!

There are two somewhat hilarious ironic aspects to this. First, Squrrl is not the one known for disappearing/running off. He's always been more of a 'homebody', though happier to go some place with his Humans in the cars than Smudge was. So he disappeared...

Except, he disappeared into the House. Of course.

And yes, they all understand WORK TO DO, NAO, KTHX. On the occasions when I get back from Hospital late and may stop to feed all livestock on the way in, rather than getting the Bros (thus, yanno, a Night Off for them) Squrrl is quite disappointed. What? NO WURX? ONOES!

Man, Aussies and Border Collies NEED, nay, DEMAND full employment! ;-)

So glad the scare turned out to be a funny though! Best possible outcome. I know I've been terrified at my mutt boy out and about in the neighborhood as we're sandwiched in by two busy roads — and I have no reliable recall with him. We did basic obedience training plus AKC Good Citizen; constant reinforcement for two years and he still ignores my "come" commands every time. But if you're a guy, with a "guy" voice? No problem. He's your obedient dude. Bob never did any training with him but he can recall him 90% of the time. Unless, of course, he's escaped. Wheee!

Grrr...

But, but, I've got to let Houdini know which parts of Indoors are his, and which parts are Mine!
