No, really, I was! Every year at the Trade Show for AORN Congress, all those wonderful companies that come to show bring tons of tchotchkes to give away. I mean, AORN hires a mail-home service fer goshsakes so you can pack it all up in a box (or Boxes) and UPS it to yourself. I told myself this year, No Tchotchkes.

Of course, I didn't totally believe myself either. I knew though that I needed that attitude or, you know, Tons. And I didn't do a mail-home box. I really did do well on that count, there's only 7 tchotchkes. Two of them are travel coffee cups, and those are stuffed with some of the other little things. One of them is a 6x6 ceramic tile; that company has done a commemorative tile for AORN Congress for 50 years.

Well, OK, there's a few more than 7 but those are actually small, and are gifts for teh Office Crue back home and one set of those is also partly a demo product for the particular company. And they are small.

And there's another one which is a gift from my friend and colleague who I served on the Coordinating Council for the IHP Specialty Assembly; she was the Chair, and gave all of us gifts (it's a nice polite thing to do; I've done the same whenever I've been Chair of a group). That, though is small, it is in fact a quilt about 45x45 cm (18x18 inches). Norrie is a fabric artist par excellance! W00t! I shall hang this in Studio 318, and it shall become a part of my Healing Art presentation as a sample of Healing Art. In fact, it will probably be packed in my carry-on bags.

There are books. Five books from the AORN Bookstore. One of those is also a gift for one of my friends/colleagues back in the OR (Recommended Standards and Practices, there are two of those, one is for me), and three are either fluffy stuff (as a gift, same friend/colleague) or are pertinent to my new role. Big books, some of them. Heavy. I'm hoping I don't exceed my weight allowance.

And I'm also packing both suits in the check bag; one came out in the carry-on in case I needed it because luggage went astray. Which it did, but came to roost before I needed the suits. Of course, if I'd neglected to include a suit in my carry-on...

Before I do leave for home, there's a couple things I'll place into the checked bag because that will help with the flight changes (and I won't need them immediately when I get home, if the luggage goes astray). Otherwise, I'm planning on living out of the small bags for the rest of the trip.

So this afternoon/evening [livejournal.com profile] salamet will pick me up and we're off to meet [livejournal.com profile] betnoir and BetHimself for dinner. First part of that is meeting up with more friends, the second is to avoid as much of LA Rush Hour as possible. No, really, as much as possible. Really. Unfortunately, meeting up with Herself's Uncle Artist Photographer isn't going to happen. It probably would have, but for Jim Butcher being at a signing in San Diego tomorrow with his newest Dresden book, and hey, I'm not passing that up! Meet Jim Butcher!

I enjoyed my visits with my nurse friends. All of us are essentially on our way home now; many like myself, taking a 'longer' way home. With the change in my practice role, I've felt somewhat out-of-synch with the whole professional association aspect; my primary area of practice is no longer directly in the OR. Meeting the friends and schmoozing helped with that. Nearly all of them are excited about the change. Several, who don't practice in the OR full-time either but are employed by the various industries that support the OR feel what I'm doing isn't much different from what they're doing. It helps to allay some of the sentiment I've felt coming from the place I left...

And oh my yes I enjoyed the roller coasters at Knott's Berry Farm!

I'll need lunch sometime soon, but want to get through most of the packing first. So, back to packing.

ETA: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] starcat_jewel for the correct spelling of tchotchkes, and the packing is nearly done, some won't be done until about time to vacate the room (laptop), and it's almost lunch time.

It's Yiddish

I'll bet you've never actually seen the word in print. It's spelled "tchotchkes". :-)

Actually, I knew it is Yiddish, and no I'd never seen it in print. I'm about to edit the entry to correct that. Thanks! *G*

Wear a headband with horns and a button saying: Temptation!

Heh. I'd thought about packing one of my pairs of horns for Tuesday... it was April Fools.

I am thinking about that. Probably be less expensive than using the 'mail home' mentioned is part of the reason I didn't do the mail home box this year.

We call that stuff Swag.
Anyone who goes to the conferences brings it back and spreads it on the breakroom table for picking through.
Grin.

Yah, swag would be a good name for it too. I used to bring back a lot more, and do the same thing in the OR lounge. Not this time. You know some of the ins and outs of it. And there are a few items which are 'swag' but won't be 'spread about'. Enough for everyone in the new office.

I tend to keep all the pencils I can get my paws on. I run through them like water.
ABA tends to really cool posters for neat books. For a Law Library we have a lot of posters about kids books. LOL.
I keep things that light up.

Heh, things that light up. Yes, one of the give-aways (very handy for me as I do those teaching presentations) is a laser pointer, rechargeable by plugging into a PC USB port.

I'm bringing a few pens back with me. Moreso than pencils, those are what disappear at work.

Nature of the differences in our work. I can only use pencil on things. They may need to be changed.

Exactly. Whereas in our work, if something needs to be changed, it is struck through and then the correction written in. With initials of who did so. Because, you know, we might be needing to deal with some of your students some day.

And the other main problem with ABA are the publishers who give away books. Folk know to show up with Things on Wheels in order to be able to just carry the stuff while one is still in the "dealers room". USPO sets up in a corner. You bet. I think I paid $25 just to walk through that room. Not even to attend any other aspect of the convention. I must have walked out with $200 worth of books.

The Things On Wheels became quite common at AORN Congress about five years ago; four or so back several companies started giving them out as their give-aways. The Anaheim Convention Center posted prominent signs that wheeled bags are not allowed on the escalators...

I found that very humourous, as almost all the education sessions were up those escalators. *G*

I've never used them. I don't collect that much, and even the years I collected more than this year I did use the mail-home box so every day (sometimes more than once a day) I'd just side-track through there and lighten the load.
