Ah, yes, the joys of dial-up connection, particularly when wanting to play with things graphical. I guess I'd better get pretty serious about investigating things like sattelite Internet, or wireless (I wonder if my cell-phone provider covers the area? Another one suggested recently, well, they don't claim to cover this particular area)... even DSL, if

Well, now, I pause. About to write the name of our land-line phone provider and this little mental flash occurs, about how I often refer to Micro Shaft, and since our phone connections are such Wonderful, Clear, Rural, Endofthetrunkline Things of Sonic Beauty, Sprint just doesn't seem accurate.

Spronk, maybe, but not Sprint. I mean, sprint implies really fast (at least for a short distance), and potentially really impressive.

I think of them as "Splint". They hold together a lot of broken things, and try to make them functional, but at best they are a short-term solution until the real infrastructure heals up.

As somebody who used to work for MS, I'm always amused at the number of people who use different names for it. From the inside, things seemed a lot different, and while I did see stupid things, I can't think offhand of much absoulte bogosity that happened on purpose. Of course, having said that, I'm writing this on my Mac, and I don't even have a Windows machine on my desk any more....

There are some MS products I enjoy using. Publisher is an excellent desktop publishing/document preparation program. Hopefully it won't become too bloated trying to please the unwashed public, as it's much easier to learn to use, and provides simpler funcitonality, than Pagemaker. And while there are other slide-show presentation packages that are just as good, Powerpoint is the yardstick their measured against.

Excel as a spreadsheet? Who recalls Lotus 123? They sued Borland over copyright infringement with Quattro Pro (a singularly better spreadsheet than Excel), won the lawsuit and lost the war.

Splint is an outstanding moniker. Splint it is. *G*
