Ah, well, I suppose I'm referring to the fact that what is purchased from iTunes comes in that proprietary format, and that the iTunes application which my iShuffle insisted it needed for setup converted all my music to that same proprietary format. I will confess, I've not played much more with it since as far as conversions are concerned.
So it may be that it's not required, per se, but the software does default to that proprietary format.
