I am fascinated by the Solstice. Which solstice it is, is of course determined by the hemisphere in which one resides. So for rather a few of the people I read regularly here, it is the Shortest Day of the Year. And, per one of them, COLD. Where I live it is the Longest Day of the Year. And, in a word, HOT.

Not bragging. That's simply to show that on the Solstice, someone will be warm, someone cold.

The Northern Hemisphere Winter Solstice for me is a profound date. My father died on the Northern Hemisphere Winter Solstice. This still brings me to a thoughtful pause on the Northern Hemisphere Summer Solstice. Apparently my friend, [livejournal.com profile] singingnettle shares this trait this year. She postulated the following questions:

What have you lost this year that you are glad to have lost?
What have you lost this year that you are sad to have lost?
What would you like to leave behind in the coming year?
What losses do you fear in the coming year?
What have you gained last year that you are glad to have gained?
What have you gained this year that you are sad to have gained?
Are there some tiny steps you can take towards what you want to gain, want to lose this year?

Just food for thought.

What have you lost this year that you are glad to have lost?
Currently loosing a bit of weight. And, if one figures the 'year' to be since the last Summer Solstice (for me), I've also parted company with Mr. Kidney Stone. Not sure I could call Mr. Stone lost, since I know where it went.

What have you lost this year that you are sad to have lost?
Again, not sure I can call them lost, even though there is some debate as to where they may be. However, my oldest sister Susan, and Mamma Mudge BorderCollie.

What would you like to leave behind in the coming year?
Well, some of that weight I mentioned above. Working on it, steadily, slowly, and yes this may be the first any of you read about it.

What losses do you fear in the coming year?
I'm not sure. I've not thought about this much.

What have you gained last year that you are glad to have gained?
A new position at Hospital.

What have you gained this year that you are sad to have gained?
I'm not sure this past year is when I 'gained' this; I am sure this past year is when I realised it's something affecting me more often. Thinking about, and not just for myself, Absent Friends and Family.

You see, that's from a toast, those words. There are too many of them becoming Absent; yet, this is naught more than Life itself.

Are there some tiny steps you can take towards what you want to gain, want to lose this year?
Well, yes, and they're being taken. There's the weight thing mentioned above; in fact, this weekend, when Herself returns from her SCA event, will be time to measure those gains and losses. Besides weight, we measure certain circumferences (waist, upper and lower arms and legs, neck, hips).

For other things? Well, some not so much, others continued persistence.

Just food for thought.
