Hey, I have a goat question for you...
Have you ever had a female retain a kid? Dad has one who birthed one kid this morning and he wants me to go palpate her belly and see if there's another still inside. If I feel one, I'm going to listen with the doppler, I guess. What do you think?

[identity profile] madshutterbug.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible, and it's bad news. It's also possible she may of retained the placenta. Auscultating may not turn anything up. Retained fetus could be due to fetal death in utero, or something else.

Or, could just be she's not recovering shape due to muscle tone. We've seen that, too. How old is the doe?

she's maybe two years old... Dad said she ate the placenta while he was watching.
Should we take her to the vet?

Up to you. We watch them for a bit. If you auscultate something, or doppler something, bit more of an indication if you want to. In our case, it depends on how much we've got invested in the goat, too. Yours may be more pets than stock. Changes the values equation.
