There Are Things I Should Do
And I'm not going to do them today. It's late, and I'm just catching up with the Must Be Dones for the day that couldn't be done because I was in a room. Could have been worse, was a good crew to work with today.
So, because for some reason it's visible here (and not on my laptop, go figure)...

What does MadShutterbug WANT to do?
If you want to find a job that pays you to be a mad shutterbug, then it probably would be prudent to grit your teeth and stick out the 4-1/2 years. If you want to stay in the field, it depends on whether you want to put the pension into education, or whether getting a more satisfying, better-paying position. If you don't care about conventional retirement and plan to keep working, then you might as well move to something you like better.
Re East Coast vs. West Coast, the pay is higher in coastal cities but so is the cost of living. I'd really advise against giving up the ranch; what you sell it for in Florida won't buy you a three-bedroom house in the Seattle area. You could get a house in the boondocks or on one of the islands; it'd be a tedious commute, but do-able, and you'd need that kind of space for the dogs and cats anyway. I don't see them as apartment dwellers.
There were some weather constraints that R. had; that's something to think about. The west coast is warm (although getting violent lately) but California is expensive; Western Washington and western Oregon are chilly and damp a lot of the time; the other side of the mountains are arid and have four seasons with hot summers and cold winters.
You could probably do very well in San Diego; La Jolla is a med-tech center and wages are good there...but the cost of living is astronomical as well. Still, that'd be my choice of where to move. But that's because the warm dry weather makes it possible for me to be ambulatory.
Or Arizona, for that matter. If you can stand the heat.

Re: :::raises hand in san diego::::
That isn't an issue for Shutterbug...although the weather might be a significant issue for Lady MadShutterbug.

Where in SD are you? Inland or coast makes a big difference.

Re: okay...
And I appreciate the down-to-earthiness of one of the answers. :-)
